This 4,637 acre recreation area has several picnic areas, a modern shooting range, large hunting areas, several fishing lakes, two trout streams, a sandy swimming beach and 15 miles of marked hiking and biking trails. Immensely popular for its eight miles of groomed x-country skiing trails and snowmobiling, sledding and ice fishing. The picturesque park area has some of the steepest hills and most rugged terrain in southeastern Michigan. Located near Lake Orion, Michigan off M-24, it consists of some of most the rugged terrain in southeastern Michigan. The recreation area is composed of a North Unit and a South Unit, which are not contiguous. The South Unit itself includes two parts separated by M-24, but the section west of M-24 has no recreational facilities or trails and is primarily undeveloped forest and grassy plains segmented by a few through-roads.

A site map of the park

Oakland county is host to more than 130 sites designated under the State Register of Historic Sites. These sites are recognized with a Michigan historic marker commonly seen across the Michigan landscape. Bald Mountain Recreation Area is host to two of these markers, as well as a third site recognized under the National Trust for Historic Places.

The Friends Group was instrumental in obtaining the Michigan historic markers for the two sites in the park:

The National Trust designation, approved in 2013, recognizes the five structures related to Trout Lake in the south unit.
